What’s missing: Adding visuals to your stellar WordPress post


So you’€™re a small-to-medium sized business owner and you’ve spent hours crafting numerous, well-written, informative and engaging posts for your company blog. You are probably scratching your head wondering why your hard work hasn’€™t paid off. Traffic is lower than expected, and the leads are far from flowing in.

The good news: it takes time. Even the best marketing strategies simply take time. You shouldn’€™t expect to see results over night, or in just a couple of weeks. But if a few months have passed and you think your blog still hasn’€™t lived up to your expectations, changes to your blogging approach – €”style, topic, blog management, etc. – €”may be on the horizon.

Perhaps, however, you are in need of a few pointers to augment your blogging outreach and make your blog a bit more appealing to not only current and potential customers, but search engines as well. It turns out there are some obvious and simple steps you can take.

You may have written 1,000 sparkling words, curated to perfection with exceptional flow and tone. Without visuals, though, that content is lacking. According to Jeff Bullas, adding visuals to your content can help immensely.

Articles (or in this case, blogs) that include images garner 94 percent more total views. Engagement-rate on Facebook, Twitter and even search results pages are higher on average when a post or result includes photo or video. According to Simply Measured, on Facebook, videos are shared 12 times more than links and text posts combined, while photos are shared twice as many times.

Images and videos can also help draw the reader’€™s attention or break up the post. So without further ado, here’s a quick step-by-step tutorial on how to insert images and videos to your WordPress blog.

Inserting images and videos to your WordPress posts

When you’€™re ready to upload an image, choose the space where you want the image to be inserted, then click on the icon next to Upload/Insert above the tool bar.

From there, you’ll be directed to the window, “Add an image”,€ where you can browse and select a saved image file from your computer, or you can enter the URL or select an image you’€™ve already uploaded to WordPress.

After selecting a file, the image will load and you will then be able to edit the image, insert a title, caption, description, etc. Toward the bottom of the page, you can set the size (full-size works in most cases) and alignment. In addition, you can use the image as your post’€™s featured image by selecting, “Use as featured image”.€ When you’€™re ready to insert, select “€œInsert Post”,€ and your image will now be included in the post.

After inserting the image it can be edited or deleted. Just select the image and click one of the following icons in the top left-hand corner.

For videos, you’€™ll need a copy of the video’€™s embed code to copy into the HTML version of the WordPress blog. First, you’€™ll need to select the HTML tab above the toolbar on the right-hand side.

From there, you’€™ll need to copy and paste the embed code to wherever you want the video to be in your post. On YouTube, an embed code can be found under the video, under the “€œshare”€ tab. After clicking “€œEmbed”,€ you will notice the code underneath, and from there you can select the text and copy and paste it into your WordPress post.
