Throughout most of the year, if you have long or unruly facial hair people will assume that’s just your style. However, when November hits it becomes a trending topic, thanks to the Movember Foundation.

In 2003, a group of men from Australia came together and began growing out their mustaches for the month of November to raise awareness for men’s health issues. Over the past 12 years, the Movember Foundation’s #Movember marketing has become a worldwide viral campaign – and they don’t just have their stylized mustaches to thank for it. More and more people every year join in on the #NoShaveNovember and #Movember event.

But what exactly makes growing out facial hair for a month so appealing? Well, we delved into their marketing strategy to figure it out. Here’s what we learned:
